St. Augustine, FL: The Searles Pirate Raid

Back in 1668, Captain Robert Searles and his fellow pirates attacked the Spanish city of St. Augustine. In their search for silver ingots, they killed sixty people, looted the place and destroyed buildings. It was this raid that motivated the Spanish to build the present day stone fort–the Castillo de San Marcos.

These days, that event is reenacted annually in March by a group called Searles’ Buccaneers. Bloodthirsty pirates once again roam the streets but this time bringing entertainment and education instead of death and destruction.

The 2012 version of the Sack of St. Augustine is to occur on March 3.
