In my young adult paranormal/historical novel, Sliding Beneath the Surface, much of the action takes place in one particular neighborhood.
Known as the Abbott Tract, it sits just north of the Castillo de San Marcos and Ripley’s Believe it or Not. Pine, Locust, Water, Osceola Mulberry, Joiner, Shenandoah and Abbott are its streets.
The place has quite a varied range of homes from old, expensive ones on the waterfront down to some pretty ramshackle structures. Many of the older homes date from the early 1900’s and some were built in the 1800s.
The area gets its name from Lucy Abbott who, in 1860, acquired the land and built multiple houses. Many of those structures are still standing.
Originally a mixture of five Spanish land grants, the area once was the home of Native Americans and a saw mill operated there in the nineteenth century.
